Jesus Transfigured for Our Encouragement (MARK 9:2-10)

Jesus Transfigured for Our Encouragement (MARK 9:2-10)

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Dear friends,

In our gospel this Sunday, Jesus brings his three disciples away from the crowd and busyness of the marketplace and takes them up the mountain. While they are on the mountain, something very strange happens; Jesus is transformed in a very dramatic way. The frightened disciples even hear a voice from the cloud saying:

As we continue with our Lenten journey, Jesus also continues his own journey towards Jerusalem, where he knows what he is going to face…He will be betrayed, denied, condemned, and crucified. Perhaps he feels and senses the disciples’ fear and anxiety and so he wants to reassure them. So, he gives them a glimpse of the things to come by revealing Himself in all his glory.

This glimpse of Jesus in all his glory is also meant for us today. Perhaps like the disciples, we too experience fear, doubt and even lack faith. We too need to be encouraged and strengthened by Jesus, especially as we continue our journey through lent. We too need to know that our prayer, fasting and sharing with the poor is not an end in itself. We are heading towards the resurrection and the new life of Easter, yet we have a distance to go. This foretaste of Jesus transfigured encourages us not to give up or give in along our journey through lent.

As we continue to make our way through lent, let us do what the voice of God says to each of us;" This is my beloved son, listen to him." Along this journey through lent, let us continue to love one another as Christ the beloved son of God tells us to.
