Accept the Light - John 3:14-21

Accept the Light - John 3:14-21

Dear friends,

In today's gospel, Jesus tells Nicodemus, who comes to him in the dark of night, that whoever lives the truth lives in the light.

As we know, there can be no life without light!

And in Jesus, we all are given the most brilliant light… a new life… a distinctive way of experiencing the world.

Nicodemus comes to Jesus

The love that has been offered to us by God through Christ invites us into that light, even with our sins, so that we can see God's face again and remember that "nothing can separate us from the love of God" if we choose to believe and be saved.

Sadly, today many people continue to turn their back on God and prefer to be in darkness. St John explains to us that this is the true cause of so much sadness and sin in the world. As long as we don't obey the commandments of love, the world will continue to live in pain and trouble. As long as our selfishness and greed rule our lives, poverty and shortage of resources are here to stay.

The call and challenge for us, therefore, is to love in the manner that Jesus loved us.

In order for love to grow and bear fruit, love has to be reciprocated.

Love as Jesus loves

So, if God so greatly loves us, we should also shine brightly by loving others.

Without a doubt, when we change our lives and choose the good, we become better persons. Let us shine to the world through our good works of love.

This lent, let us be aware of God's infinite love for us, and allow our acts of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to offer a light of hope to a hungry and thirsty world.
