This evening I visited the Sisters' garden with Sr. Carolyne, Program Coordinator for CARITAS For Children's child sponsorship programs in Nkokonjeru. The Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi have some land behind the convent and Sr. Carolyne spends many Saturdays there working in the gardens.
Among other things, they grow beans, matoke, cassava, and sweet potatoes. One of the sisters is even working on digging a fish pond to raise tilapia.
Sr. Carolyne contemplates her cornfield - once, after she had planted the seeds, a bunch of monkeys came by and dug up her work for a snack.
Mounds of sweet potatoes planted in the sisters' garden - cassava and matoke plants can also be seen in the background.
Sr. Carolyne carries home a bundle of freshly picked beans.
