Education for Sylvester's mother ceased at primary five due to an insurmountable financial barrier. At a mere 14 years old, she was swept into a union with a humble peasant, and they welcomed five children into the world. However, the untimely demise of her husband to HIV/AIDS in June 2014 thrust her into a precarious existence. Left jobless with five children, including a three-year-old named Silvester, she was suddenly alone in a battle against staggering odds.

Desperate, she reached out to her relatives, hoping they would extend a helping hand and share the burden of raising her children. Yet, each door was slammed in her face, each plea met with apathy. Now, this single mother is left with the daunting task of fending for her family alone.

Today, she labors tirelessly in other people's gardens, her hands raw and calloused from the back-breaking work. She earns barely enough to scrape by, providing for their basic needs, but the looming school fees for her school-aged children seem an insurmountable hurdle. Amidst the struggle, Silvester, a boy with a creative mind and dreams of engineering, holds onto hope for his education, a critical stepping stone to a future that currently hangs in the balance.

Please consider helping Sylvester to break free from his precarious situation. Without a sponsor, it seems impossible. With your help though, he will have a chance of a decent future and can even support his family when he gets older.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
