Sauma's father passed away in 2021 after a brief illness, leaving the family in dire poverty. Securing a meal for the day is often a matter of chance. Sauma’s father used to take on various odd jobs such as cleaning in the trading center, digging by the side of roads, and offloading garbage from trucks, tasks that his mother is unable to perform.

Sauma's mother, now the sole provider for the family of five children, strives to support them by working in individuals' gardens. This work is extremely challenging, particularly in dry seasons when breaking the hard ground is necessary. Despite her efforts, she is poorly compensated for her labor. Garden workers are often marginalized and underpaid, which leaves her struggling to provide for basic home essentials and school fees for her children.

Sauma's school attendance is irregular due to these financial constraints. She dreams of becoming a nurse in order to help heal people like her father. She doesn't want other children in her community to be fatherless due to curable illness. If given the necessary support, she will be able to attend classes regularly and work towards achieving her goal.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
