Doreen comes from a very large family of 13 children. The parents are peasant farmers and the food they produce is just enough to feed their extensive family. Farming can be very risky in Uganda, and they often experience poor yields from their gardens due to their inability to fertilize their crops and the numerous pests that are drawn to their garden. Last season, they didn’t get anything from of their garden due to a drought that struck their crops. Because of this, they were forced to work in other people's gardens in order to supply food for the family.
Even with the challenges of their upbringing, the children are still very bright. They show a lot of academic promise, but their parents simply cannot afford school dues for their numerous children. Doreen longs to attend school and learn with her peers, but without financial help, this desire will never be fulfilled. This is why Doreen's family has come to seek support through Caritas for children.
