David's life took a tragic turn when his father drowned in Lake Victoria while fishing on a dangerous, windy morning. Ignoring warnings from his colleagues about the perilous conditions, he ventured out in a dug-out canoe, only for the worst to happen. His body was recovered four days later after a search involving special police divers. Since then, David and his family have faced immense challenges.

David's mother, now the sole provider for eight children, works hard to make ends meet. She raises domestic animals like pigs, chickens, and goats, and grows bananas to generate a small income. Despite these efforts, the financial strain on the family is significant, making it difficult to cover the children's educational expenses.

David attends classes at a privately owned school near his home, but his attendance is not regular due to the inability to pay school fees. He dreams of becoming a doctor, and with the help of a sponsor, he would be able to attend school regularly, focus on his studies, and work towards his goal of helping others in the medical field.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
