Ashrat's early life was marked by tragedy with the loss of both parents at a young age, leaving the cause of their passing unknown due to the family's inability to afford a postmortem. The circumstances were further complicated by the parents' struggles with substance abuse. In the wake of this loss, the responsibility of caring for Ashrat and his siblings fell to an aunt, who, despite having her own large family, took them in, adding to the financial strain of managing a household now extended to include eight additional children.

This burden has particularly impacted the children's education, with the aunt facing significant challenges in affording school fees for all the children under her care. Despite these hardships, Ashrat has shown a remarkable commitment to his education, engaging actively in school and earning recognition within his community for his diligence and ambition. His enthusiasm for learning and participation in various school activities highlights his determination and resilience in the face of adversity.

Ashrat's aspirations extend beyond the classroom, with dreams of becoming a civil engineer inspired by his admiration for construction work. This ambition reflects not just a personal goal but a desire to contribute and build within his community. However, realizing this dream hinges on overcoming the financial hurdles that currently hinder his educational progress, making support for his academic journey crucial.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
