Abbie lives with her grandmother after the loss of both of her parents. Her father passed away following a short illness, and not long after, her mother also died, leaving Abbie and her five siblings in the care of their elderly grandmother. The family’s loss was deeply felt within the community, and the grandmother often reflects on the tragedy with great sorrow.

Since taking on the responsibility of caring for six grandchildren, the grandmother has worked tirelessly to support the family. She earns a small income through casual work at a nearby convent, where she helps tend flower gardens and a banana plantation. In the evenings, she also sells local gin to supplement the family’s limited income.

Despite her efforts, it remains difficult to meet all the household needs, including school-related expenses. As a result, Abbie’s school attendance is irregular due to a lack of required materials and fees.

Abbie is a bright and promising learner who enjoys school and shows strong potential. With consistent support, she would be able to attend classes regularly and continue her education in a more stable and hopeful environment.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
