Abbie stays with her grandmother. This so because the two parents passed on and the old woman took over the care of her granddaughter and other five siblings. It was the father who died first after short illness and the mother who had been taking care of the six children followed. This shocked the entire clan and kept on wondering as to what had befallen the family. The grandmother tells the ordeal while tears rolling down her cheeks.
The grandmpther works hard to maintain the family by doing odd jobs at a nearby convent where she digs in the flower gardens and the banana plantation. In the evening , she sells some potent gin to people who enjoy it.
Abbie attends classes but not on regular basis because of lack of school requirements. She a brilliant learner and if any assistance is extended to her she will able to have a steady attendance of classes. She wants to be a nurse.
