Whitney Suzan's life is marked by the complex challenges of living with sickle cell anemia, a condition that requires continuous medical attention and treatment. Her family, particularly after the financial setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, struggles to manage the healthcare expenses necessary to ensure Whitney and her sister Roselyne's well-being. The pandemic's impact on their father's job has compounded the financial difficulties, making the cost of medications like hydroxyurea, Folic Acid, and the Pneumococcal 23 vaccine a significant burden. The family's financial strain is further highlighted by their mother, who allocates a substantial portion of her income to cover the medication costs, leaving little for other necessities, including Whitney's education.

The daily regimen of medications and the requirement for hospital admissions during health crises put a continuous strain on the family's resources. The mother's dedication to her daughters' health and well-being, despite the challenges, is a testament to her love and determination. However, the reality of their situation is stark, with the high cost of medical care for Whitney and Roselyne making it increasingly difficult to maintain a stable life and for Whitney to pursue her education and dreams.

Whitney's aspirations for a better future are at risk without external support. The request for assistance through Sr Jane, who herself has limited means, underscores the dire need for help. Whitney's situation calls for the kindness and generosity of sponsors who can provide the support necessary for her to continue her education and realize her dreams, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the challenges of managing a chronic health condition and the aftermath of a global pandemic.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
