Maria Elizabeth and her two sisters live with their parents in the suburbs of a small trading center in the central region of Uganda. The family resides in a modest three-roomed house that her father built during his younger years. Each morning, her father goes to work in a nearby swamp area where he cultivates a variety of food crops, including yams and maize. Her mother is a housewife who stays at home to manage all the household chores.

Maria Elizabeth, like many girls her age, attends classes at a nearby privately owned school. However, her attendance is often poor due to her parents' inability to consistently meet school obligations. Frequently, Maria Elizabeth is sent home to collect outstanding school fees or to acquire essential classroom supplies such as books, paper, and pens.

Despite these challenges, Maria Elizabeth is a dedicated student with a strong interest in her classwork. She strives to excel in all her classroom activities, and her examination scores are consistently above average, even with her irregular attendance. Maria Elizabeth needs assistance to ensure she can attend classes regularly and work towards her dream of becoming a doctor.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
