In a household grappling with financial instability, four children—three girls and one boy—live under the care of their grandmother. Their family dynamic shifted significantly after their mother left due to the deepening poverty within their home. Their father, engaged in casual labor, struggles to secure consistent work, leaving the family's financial situation precarious at best. This inconsistency in income has directly impacted the children's education, particularly that of Christine, whose attendance at school has been irregular.

Christine's academic journey is marred by uncertainty, with her father's sporadic income proving insufficient for the family's basic needs, let alone the steady payment of school fees. Despite finding occasional work, the gap between jobs can stretch to a month, exacerbating the family's challenges. Amidst these hardships, Christine's passion for singing and her social nature provide her with some solace, though her dreams of a consistent education and a future in nursing seem distant.

The story of Christine and her family highlights a common struggle faced by many households, where the fluctuating availability of work severely restricts children's access to education. For Christine, whose aspiration is to become a nurse, the prospect of fulfilling her potential hangs in the balance. Support towards her education could offer a pathway out of the cycle of poverty and towards a future where she can achieve her dreams and contribute meaningfully to her community.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
