My name is Odongo Emmanuel, and I am the second born among nine children in my family. Since my childhood, I have always looked up to Catholic priests and desired to become one. This zeal to become a priest started when I was still a small boy, in primary school. I find myself filled with indescribable joy at the thought of one day becoming a priest.

After completing Primary Level Seven (P.7) in 2005, I joined St. Kizito Minor Seminary Nandere, but I did not stay for more than one year because my parents could no longer afford the school fees. After I dropped out of the seminary, I embarked on charcoal burning and selling firewood to be able buy myself books and other scholastic materials. I remember I had only one pair of black trousers that I could wash every night to avoid looking dirty. After one year living this way in the village, I started attending a secular school, but this was very difficult for me because I felt that I would have no way of pursuing my dream of becoming a priest. I remember I cried a lot during that time, but never lost focus hoping that one day God would remember my prayers, even if it meant being a late vocation.

After I finished Secondary Level Four (S.4), I reminded my father of my dream of going back to the seminary, but he looked at me and I saw tears rolling down his cheeks. He held my hand and told me, “My son, I would love to take you back to the seminary, but I cannot afford the seminary fees as well as supporting our large family, unless you want your siblings to always go hungry.” These words made me shed tears as well and also made me pray more that one day God would open the way!

Still focused on following my vocation, I joined the OFM Capuchins in 2014, and I pray that my dream comes true and I serve God with an undivided heart as a priest. I am now am pursuing my theological studies at the seminary and I hope to finish four years from now. I pledge my prayers to whoever is can help me follow my vocation.
