Ryton’s mother gave birth to him when she had dropped out of school because her family couldn’t afford it. Because she was still a child, the father ran away for fear of being prosecuted and they still don’t know where he is. Ryton and his mother are currently living at his grandparents’ home and they struggle to get enough produce from a garden they have to cover all their needs: they have to feed the whole family (grandparents, Ryton, his mother, his uncles and aunties), clothe them and have enough for any medical expenses that arise.

Through an organization that helps to educate young mothers, Ryton’s mother got an opportunity to go back to school. She is now in Secondary Five (S.5) and being a student too, is not able to give any financial support to her son. Ryton hopes to become a doctor in future if he gets a chance to complete his education.

About my country:
Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
