Racheal is the sixth child in her family living with her mother. Her parents have separated because her father was an abusive drunkard who does not support the children at all. Rachael’s mother works as a housemaid, earning about $18 a month – not enough to rent a room and feed and clothe 10 children. Racheal’s elder brothers are old enough to be out in the world, but they are struggling to support themselves since they were never able to get an education. The other little siblings are taken care of by relatives and friends but are not in school either.

Racheal is a caring girl who is talented in singing and dancing, but her dream is to become a teacher in future. She says she would like to teach her siblings at least some basic education as well as other many children that are their village who are illiterate.

About my community:
Mary Queen of Families (Kasana-Luweero)
The Kasana-Luweero diocese suffered a massacre during the 1981-1986 civil war which left many children orphaned. As the effects of this tragedy are still felt today, we pray to Mary, Queen of Families to help build healthy families and restore hope in this diocese.
About my country:
Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education and clean water.
