Francis’ father is a peasant farmer and her mother is a housewife. They sell their produce to earn a living, and while they work very hard, they only make enough money to feed their family. Francis’ father cannot afford to send her or her siblings to school.

Francis needs to receive an education to stand a chance of breaking the cycle of poverty she has been born into. Without the tools and skills she needs to get a decent job, she will be reduced to menial labor or could become dependent on men who will take advantage of her. With a good education, she hopes  to become a nurse when she grows up, and serve the sick and needy.

About my country:
Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
