Darius’ parents struggle to provide for their four children because the only source of income they have available to them is peasant farming. The food they produce is just enough to feed themselves, and if they have other needs they will sometimes skip meals and sell the food to pay for things like clothing and medical care. In such a situation it is impossible for them to send their children to school. Darius’ father dropped out of school when he was in Primary, and her mother left in Secondary 4 because their families could not afford to pay the tuition fees. They hope for their children to have a better future if they can get an education.

Darius is a very talented girl who loves to sing and dance. Her mother is a member of the church choir and she teaches some of the songs to her daughter. Darius is also one of the best singers in the children’s choir at their church.

Darius would like to become a doctor when she grows up if she is able to finish her education. She has no way of going to school unless she is sponsored.
