Benitah Nansubuga
Uganda
DOB: 05/30/2012
Female
Good Health
Favorite Subject: English
Favorite Pastime: Netball

Like so much of the population of Uganda, Benitah’s life has been tragically altered because of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Her father died of the disease in 2019. Her mother, while being HIV positive herself, is fortunately able to function with it thanks to medication.

After the death of her husband, since their relatives were unable and unwilling to support the family, Benitah’s mother had to go to work by digging in other people’s gardens to get enough food for them to live on. Sometimes she is paid in cash instead of food, but it still isn’t enough for her to pay the rent and send her four children to school.

Benitah wants to become a pilot when she grows up if she is able to go to school and finish her education. Two of her siblings, Jonathan and Shirat, are also available for sponsorship through CARITAS.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
