Abas’ father used to be a soldier in the Ugandan army, however he received serious damage to his ears and brain while fighting in a war against rebels in the Gulu region. When he was injured, he was discharged from the army but receives no help from the government aside from medication for his now-chronic ailments.
Because of this sad situation, Abas’ father can no longer do anything to support his family and his mother is uneducated and untrained in anything so she is only able to dig in other people’s gardens to get food for the family. This family is in desperate need of help so it is necessary for Abas to be sent to school where he will be educated and given clothing and regular meals, thus easing the burden on his mother. He loves to play soccer and hopes to become a pilot when he grows up.
