Rihanah’s story is a particularly sad one. Her father died a few years ago in an accident, so her widowed mother, looking for support, got together with another man. This stepfather at first showed kindness and love to her and her two children, but after the birth of another child he told Rihanah’s mother to either take the children away or he would kick her out as well!

Her mother then went to relatives for help and one person took Rihanah in, but they forced to her to work for them as a maid and mistreated her. Thankfully the children are now staying with their grandma who tries to care for them but is unable to support them in school. Their mother makes charcoal out of rubbish and sells it to earn some money to help feed her children and the grandma grows some food in her garden.

Rihannah is kind, humble and hard-working and her dream is to become a doctor when she grows up so that she can support her family and community. This won’t be possible unless she is able to be sponsored for school. Her younger sister Immaculate Nabuguzi is also available for sponsorship.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
