Lilian Nansubuga
Uganda
DOB: 10/29/2004
Female
Good Health
Favorite Subject: Math
Favorite Pastime: Dancing

Lilian is a very clever girl who lost her sponsor of six years and badly needs a new one to receive the care she needs to live a dignified life. She has now been without sponsorship for over two years and because of her best performance, the school held on her and she performed very well in the recent national exams as the second best student in a school. Unfortunately the school can no longer support her further.

Lilian’s family is in a very difficult situation, although a common one for Ugandan families. Her father passed away when the children were very young, and her mother suffers from HIV. Because of her health conditions and the loss of her husband, Lilian’s mother cannot manage to provide for her children alone, although she works very hard to feed and clothe her children by digging in people's gardens.

Lilian needs to go to boarding school so that she will be properly provided for as a growing girl needing food, safety, hygiene products, and most importantly, an education. Without a sponsorship, Lilian will be forced to live her life fetching water, gathering wood, and helping her mother dig in gardens - which will perpetuate the cycle of poverty she grew up in. Additionally, it puts her in a precarious position where she can easily be taken advantage of for a simple meal.

Her previous report cards demonstrated that Lilian is very clever, loving, and has demonstrated good leadership abilities. Lilian's desire is to become a midwife so that she can help save more mothers from dying during childbirth, and so that she can become self-reliant and support her family.

To help Lilian go to boarding school, she will need $150/month from one sponsor

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
