Maria resides with her parents who engage in subsistence agriculture, focusing on growing crops and keeping animals on a small scale. Subsistence agriculture is a method where the produce is primarily used to sustain the family, with little surplus for sale or trade. Unfortunately, the income generated from this agricultural practice is insufficient to meet the family's needs.

Maria and her siblings attend a nearby privately owned school. However, their school attendance is irregular, with significant portions of the academic term spent waiting for their parents to gather enough resources to afford their school fees. This financial constraint puts their education at risk.

Maria, despite facing these challenges, shows promise academically. With the necessary assistance, she could overcome the hurdles, continue her education consistently, and work towards realizing her dream of becoming a teacher.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the "Pearl of Africa," Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda's population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
