Harriet is a happy, quiet girl with a great love for education. Schooling in her village is a little different than in other places - they do not have a permanent school building, so the children are taught under an erected outdoor shade, or even under the shade of a tree! Harriet has learned her lessons through primary and even into secondary in this way.

Harriet hopes very much to be able to attend a permanent school with classes in a real building, but her parents cannot afford to send her. They are peasants who dig in other people’s gardens to earn food, and their village is so remote that you can’t even get there by car! Harriet was sponsored for a while but it has been many years since she has received the support that she needs to finish her education. Her sister Grace is also in our program and is in need of a sponsor.

Despite her difficult circumstances, Harriet is grateful for the gift of her life and dreams of becoming a nurse when she grows up to save the lives of many people (including her relatives) who she sees die in her village due to lack of treatment and medical support.

About my community:
St. Francis of Assisi (Lugazi)
In the Lugazi Diocese, CARITAS finds some of the poorest families in all of Uganda. Because of St. Francis of Assisi's great love for the poor, he is the patron of this community. We pray for his intercession so that more children in this diocese have a chance to overcome the poverty that they have always known.
About my country:
Uganda
Known as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in the Great Lakes region of East Africa. Since emerging from decades of civil war and the devastation of AIDs, estimates indicate that 48% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 15. Young children suffer disproportionately in the struggle to access healthcare, education, and clean water.
